Imperialism "Meets" Project!
Because we are approaching the end of our first unit, Imperialism & The Spanish-American War, we are beginning to assess more frequently. Students will complete a project stating the reasons FOR and AGAINST American Imperialism in the areas of: Economics, Geography, Politics, and Society. Students will work with group members to come up with arguments for each side, for each topic, and will then put that into an individual Google Presentation. This will assess ECON 3, GEO 3, P/G 3 and S/C 3 on our learning ladder chart (see below) and will be due October 31st on Google Drive. Most of this project will be completed in class, but some work may need to be done at home if a student falls behind. After the completion of this project, we will work on retakes (if necessary) and then the "exceeds" activities if students would like to try them! Exceeds tasks and retakes will take place November 4th-6th. The 1st trimester ends November 7th!

Imperialism & Spanish-American War:
We're really plunging into our American Imperialism unit and have even had our first assessment. Students needed to show me that they could:
- Define imperialism, isolationism, expansionism, foreign policy, and yellow journalism (for a 1 on the learning ladder for P/G, GEO, ECON, S/C)
- Explain how America's foreign policy changed from George Washington to Theodore Roosevelt. (2 on the learning ladder for P/G)
Students should be keeping track of their progress on each earning ladder on their gold "Learning Ladder Logs." As we progress throughout this unit, students are able to retake any step on the learning ladder that they did not meet. Retakes will most often take place in HIP, but if it impacts a majority of the class, then they may be done in class. At the end of the unit, these will go home to be signed by a parent.
Upcoming Assessments: Retakes (above assessment) on Monday 9/29, ECON 2 on Monday 9/29, and GEO 2 on Thursday 10/2 (See Learning Ladder document for more information on these assessments.)

Primary vs. Secondary Sources:
Beginning today, we will be focusing on reviewing primary vs. secondary sources. Students will take notes and complete activities to help them remember the difference between the two types of sources. We will be looking at history just as detectives look at a crime scene. Primary sources are our clues to help us to figure out exactly what happened. Students are asked to bring in 5-10 artifacts about their lives in their primary source bags on September 4th. Then, they will be paired up with another student to review their artifacts, interview, and eventually write a biography on. During this project, students not only get to practice analyzing primary sources, but they get to know their classmates a little better!

We will be focusing on basic social studies skills for the first few weeks of the school year. Students will be taking a pre-assessment to determine what they already know about American history and geography. We will use these assessments to determine what skills to focus on for the next three weeks. Then, will begin studying Imperialism and the Spanish-American War around the middle of September. Check back in a few weeks to see the learning ladder document (with each standard broken down) for this first unit.
